Cow Urine Can Cure Many Diseases

By Dr. Virender Kumar Jain

The cow is a mobile medical dispensary. It is the treasure of medicines. Cow urine therapy is capable of curing many curable and incurable diseases. The holy texts, like Atharva Veda, Charaka Samhita, Rajni Ghuntu, Vridhabhagabhatt, Amritasagar, Bhavaprakash, Sushruta Samhita, etc., contain beautiful description about the medicinal benefits of cow urine. Cow Urine Treatment and Research Center, Indore has conducted a lot of research over the past few years and reached the conclusion that it is capable of curing diabetes, blood pressure, asthma, psoriasis, eczema, heart attack, blockage in arteries, fits, cancer, AIDS, piles, prostrate, arthritis, migraine, thyroid, ulcer, acidity, constipation, gynecological problems, ear and nose problems and several other diseases.

The analysis of cow urine has shown that it contains nitrogen, sulphur, phosphate, sodium, manganese, carbolic acid, iron, silicon, chlorine, magnesium, melci, citric, titric, succinic, calcium salts, Vitamin A, B, C, D, E, minerals, lactose, enzymes, creatinine, hormones and gold. A person falls ill when there is deficiency or excess of these substances inside the body. Cow urine contains all of these substances, which are naturally present in the human body. Therefore consumption of cow urine maintains the balance of these substances and this helps cure incurable diseases.

The Indian culture gives special place to the cow. All the 330 million gods have cow as their prime temple (all devas reside in the cow). Deva means to give, the strength to give, the ability to give more and take the minimum. This is known as Devata. The cow takes very less from us and gives us more. Therefore the Indian people have shown this with the help of strict devotion and dedication. Thus the cow has a prominent place in the Indian life and economy. Wealth, religion, enjoyment and salvation are accomplished with the service of the cow. The Indian farmer used to be known as king, or the giver of grains, due to the tradition developed in India thousands of years back. Our entire life is dependent on the cow.

The whole world takes the cow as their mother. The reason is that the birth-giving mother gives milk to its child only for one or two years, but the mother cow gives milk throughout its life, which is like nectar. A black cow is tied in the Shiva temple, and when we see the Shiva along with the black cow then we are able to overcome the malefic effects of planets in our natal horoscope. When we see the ankles of the cow we protect ourselves from sudden deaths. Circumambulating the cow is equivalent to visiting all of the holy places. As the peepal tree and tulasi plant give oxygen, similarly the cow is the only animal which purifies the air. If one spoon of pure ghee is poured on burning cow dung (in homa) then they can produce one-ton of pure air, therefore ghee made with cow milk is used in sacrificial fires and havans. There is no better method to remove pollution.

Cow milk, butter, ghee and buttermilk are like nectar. The cow dung is not faeces, but a purifier. It helps produce the best quality grains, fruits, and vegetables when used as manure. Cow urine is a divine medicine and is a natural pesticide for crops. Pure ghee made with cow milk poured on burning cow cakes dung, produces a smoke that subsides the effect of poisonous gas. Cow urine contains copper, which is converted into gold inside the human body. It removes all toxicity. Drinking cow milk gives strength and increases the pure qualities in the human mind.

The horns and back hump of the cow are like two powerful pyramids. We receive the strengths of the stars and sun through the medium of cow dung, milk, curd, ghee, etc. The place where the cow is tied does not produce any vastu related ill effects. If there is any malefic effect of any planet, serving the cow with chapatti and jaggery calms down the malefic effect.

The following are some of my personal experiences treating people with cow urine therapy. A person was suffering with cancer and had been told that they would not survive for long; cow therapy was done on many such cases. Out of the many patients, who were suffering with cancer for the last 4 years, many are now leading a healthy life. In the same way, a diabetes patient who was taking insulin and having a sugar level of 488 or 420 did not have the necessity to take insulin after the treatment of cow urine. In the same way AIDS, asthma, psoriasis, eczema, blood pressure, heart disease, prostrate, piles, etc., also have been cured with this treatment.

Premchand Rathore was suffering from asthma and isnophilia. He had palpitations and cough along with phlegm. He is now enjoying a healthy life after taking cow urine therapy. The cough and phlegm reduced. Mrs. Sharda Jalani was having varicose veins and dysmenorrhea. She used to have swollen nerves, pain, and swelling as soon as she used to stand up and it was very painful at the time of menses. She was advised to undergo operation for both of these problems. But she went for cow urine therapy and is now healthy. Omprakash Paul suffered a heart attack. He had high levels of cholesterol and chest pain. After taking cow urine therapy he is able to walk up to four kilometers, he does not get chest pain and his cholesterol level is also normal. Chandmal Gurjar suffered with cancer of the food pipe four years back, he could not take liquids also. Now he is able to eat and drink properly, he is healthy and working in the rice fields. There are thousands of people who have recovered from serious diseases after taking this therapy.

Today many AIDS patients are taking cow urine therapy. People who were suffering with migraine and headache for the past 15 years have recovered within six months of taking this therapy. In the past few years the Cow Urine Treatment and Research Center, Indore has treated 150,000 people. Out of the total patients 85 to 90 percent were also suffering from constipation. There is an old saying that if the stomach is clean half of the diseases get cured automatically. The patients taking cow urine therapy are able to enjoying sound heath within one month of this therapy.

Sushma Khurana had a thyroid complaint. Before taking this therapy her T3 level was 4, T4 was 15, TSH was 0.2. After six months of this treatment T4 was 9.97, TSH was 1.35 and today she is free of this problem. This therapy is also beneficial in the case of eczema, ringworm, itching and other skin problems. Old eczema patients have gained a lot from this therapy. Also school and college aged children can be free from the menace of pimples and acne with this simple therapy.

How We Can See God

First of all when it comes to trying to see God, if we expect to see God with our material senses, we need to first understand the limitations of the senses we have. We often need glasses merely to see clearly, and we also need enough light to do so. If it is too dark, or if there is no light with which to see, we can hardly make out what is right in front of us. So it is fair enough to say that we will never see that which is spiritual with these dull material senses.
However, even when it comes to researching the smallest elements like the atoms, and then defining parts of them like neutrons, protons, etc., do the scientists actually see every molecule that they discuss, even with super powerful microscopes? Sometimes not. In some cases, they only see the evidence that such particles exist, but do not directly see the particle itself. Similarly, even if we cannot see God directly with our material senses, we can still look around and see the evidence for God’s existence. But to do that, we also need to have the right knowledge.
For example, even a person with a little common sense can understand that there must be a source of everything, a point of origin, or what some call an Absolute Truth, the underlying basis or foundation for everything. And that something can be called God. That is why in some circles people ask, What is not God? And in that respect, we can perceive that everything is a part of God, or everything is but a display of God’s energy, including ourselves. Then we begin to see or feel the presence of God all around us.
However, in the Vedic sources of knowledge, such as the Bhagavad-gita, we find wherein Lord Krishna Himself begins to instruct Arjuna how to recognize Him in so many things. By meditating on and understanding this knowledge, we can begin to more closely recognize the evidence for God all around us, especially in all great and powerful things.
In Bhagavad-gita (7.4-11) Lord Krishna explains, “Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence, and false ego—altogether these eight comprise My separated material energies. Besides this inferior nature, O mighty-armed Arjuna, there is a superior energy of Mine, which are all living entities who are struggling with material nature and are sustaining the universe. Of all that is material and all that is spiritual in this world, know for certain that I am both its origin and dissolution. O conqueror of wealth [Arjuna], there is no Truth superior to Me. Everything rests upon Me as pearls are strung on a thread.
“O son of Kunti [Arjuna], I am the taste in fresh water, the light of the sun and the moon, the syllable Om in the Vedic mantras; I am the sound in ether and ability in man. I am the original fragrance of the earth, and I am the heat in fire. I am the life of all that lives, and I am the penances [which brings one closer to God] of all ascetics. O son of Pritha, know that I am the original seed of all existences, the intelligence of the intelligent, and the prowess of all powerful men. I am the strength of the strong, devoid of passion and desire.”
Recognizing God in nature is also outlined in such Vedic texts as the Atharva Veda. Therein it is explained: "God is present in all the forces of nature. He identifies Himself with these faultless, blameless forces. Their home is in God, vast like the ocean, so do the Vedic scholars say unto us. They [forces of nature] come quickly at the time of creation and vanish at the time of dissolution of the universe." (Atharva Veda 2.3.3)
"God is the Lord of all worlds. God gave the sun its intense heat. God, through His manifold forces, has set in motion the Earth, Moon, and planets in space." (Atharva Veda 8.2.40)
The existence of God is also perceived by beholding all that God created. Herein it is described in the Arthava Veda (Kanda 8, Hymn 7, Paryaya 4, verses 29-39): "Just as the sun has brought forth the day, the day derives its origin from him [the sun], so the existence of God is perceived by beholding the universe, which in reality is created by Him. Just as the Sun appears to be born from the night, as it appears after its expiry, and night is born of the Sun as it sets in the evening, so the existence of God is perceived by beholding the Great Night of Dissolution, which in reality is created by Him. The Sun comes into existence after the atmosphere [the elements], as if he is produced from it, and the existence of atmosphere is realized by beholding the Sun. So the existence of God is also perceived by beholding the atmosphere which in reality is created by Him. [In the same way] the existence of God is perceived by beholding air, which in reality is created by Him. The existence of God is perceived by beholding the heaven, which in reality is created by Him. The existence of God is perceived by beholding the regions, which in reality are created by Him. The existence of God is perceived by beholding the Earth, which in reality is created by Him. The existence of God is created by beholding fire, which in reality is created by Him. The existence of God is perceived by beholding the waters, which in reality are created by Him. The existence of God is perceived by studying the holy Vedic verses, which in reality are revealed by Him."
Another aspect of the description in Bhagavad-gita is to recognize how God Himself descends into this material realm to reveal Himself through His divine instructions, pastimes, personality, and to show us His form. And even if He is not in front of us personally, we can learn about Him and see Him through the descriptions of the Vedic shastra. Thus, even though we may not be able to see Him with our material senses, He can indeed reveal Himself and make Himself visible to us through such means. However, we also need to become qualified to do that, which we will discuss shortly.
In another aspect of seeing God is that found in the descriptions that many of you have no doubt heard about in near-death-experiences. Often it is described that in such an experience someone may be going down a tunnel, sometimes greeted by past relatives, until they finally approach a fantastic light, a being of unconditional love and acceptance. They often do not exactly see the form of this being, since it is engulfed in light, but they accept the being to be the object of their faith or religion, such as Jesus, or Buddha, or Krishna, or someone similar.
When our own level of consciousness is lower than the higher beings that we may encounter, as in a near-death-experience, we may often see them and the frequency in which they exist as merely white light. In other words, we have not elevated our own consciousness to the frequency of that level of existence to be able to perceive and discern all the details therein. Thus, we perceive such entities as either beings of light, or engulfed in effulgence.
A similar experience is described in the Shri Ishopanishad in mantras 15 and 16, where it says: “O my Lord, sustainer of all that lives, Your real face is covered by Your dazzling effulgence. Please remove that covering and exhibit Yourself to Your pure devotee. O my Lord, O primeval philosopher, maintainer of the universe, O regulating principle, destination of the pure devotees, well-wisher of the progenitors of mankind—please remove the effulgence of Your transcendental rays so that I can see Your form of bliss. You are the eternal Supreme Personality of Godhead, like unto the sun, as am I.”
In this way, we have to raise ourselves to the same refined frequency or energy level as God in our endeavor to perceive Him directly, beyond the dazzling effulgence. Also, the last statement in the above paragraph means that as the sunshine is basically of the same quality in essence as the sun, and an expansion of it, so we are also the same spiritual quality as God. We are not as powerful as God, but we are of the same essential quality. Thus, seeing God is not unexpected, but we simply have to regain that same spiritual quality in our consciousness to acquire the ability to perceive God directly. And all that really means is to reduce the power of the material energy’s influence on ourselves through our spiritual practice.
One more example I would like to use is the radio and television waves that carry the signals of so many stations, whether it be news, music, entertainment, or other forms of communication that are all around us all the time. However, if I do not know about them, or do not think they exist, then how can you convince me that they are real? After all, you cannot see them, taste them, smell them, or feel them. So how can you convince someone that they are real?
The answer is that you have to have a good receiver. Then anyone will see that such waves are all around us, but they mean nothing unless you have a good receiver. Then you realize that throughout the frequency range in which these waves travel, there are so many such waves, and that they are extremely useful, with numerous things that can be done with them. You can even broadcast your own radio waves simply by your cell phone, or use your GPS system, etc. Then they become such a common part of our everyday lives that we no longer even think about them. So if someone says that radio and television waves are not real, or that he does not believe in them, what would you think of him? Obviously, this guy has no knowledge, has no experience, he is not in touch with reality, which means he must have been living under a rock, in a closet, or way out in the wilderness all of his life. You would think he is too weird.
Similarly, if someone has no knowledge of God, and says he does not believe in God, what would you think? Pretty much the same thing, that he is merely out of touch with the proper knowledge that would help make someone understand how to recognize God.
Therefore, another way to perceive God is through the instructions and knowledge as given by a spiritual master, or a person who is a good receiver of the transcendental vibration that exists all around us. Thus, he can receive or perceive it, and then also broadcasts the spiritual knowledge through his instructions that will allow us to understand it, at least to those who will listen. This is how we learn, through such personal instructions or through books that are written by such pure receptors of the spiritual vibrations.
It is also through this means that we can train ourselves to be such receivers of spiritual vibrations or frequencies if we want to. We have to learn it from others to be able to do it ourselves. It is through the spiritual practices, as provided by those spiritual teachers who are already successful, and through the information and instructions given in the Vedic texts, that will also enable us to elevate our consciousness, and the vibrational frequency in which we operate. Then we can also see that which exists in those higher dimensions or spiritual realms.
Therefore, unlike those religions that depend mostly on faith, the Vedic or Dharmic system is that a person follows the path to spiritualize their consciousness to the point where the spiritual dimension becomes perceptible, and then one can begin to enter into that dimension and function on that level. The point is that our consciousness is where we live. We may keep our body in a house, or in particular clothes, and so on, but it is our consciousness that is the vibrational frequency in which we live and send out to others. And as we raise that frequency, we will be able to see that which exists on those higher frequencies as well. In other words, the more spiritual you become, the more you can perceive that which is spiritual. As you become more spiritual, meaning the more you spiritualize your consciousness, then the more qualified you become to recognize, approach, or even see God in so many ways. And once you begin to have that experience, then there is no further argument about what is or what is not God.
So, would you like to become such a perceiver of the spiritual realm? If you do, then the way we work to uplift and spiritualize our consciousness includes the following: Chanting or singing devotional songs, or the names of God, using mantras for japa meditation, associating with like-minded people, discussing this knowledge and information, especially by going to the temple, eating blessed vegetarian food or Krishna prasada, etc.

trinad api sunicena
taror iva sunicena
amanina manadina
kirtanyaha sada hari

One should chant the holy name of the Lord in a humble state of mind, thinking oneself to be lower than the straw in the street; one should be more tolerant than a tree, devoid of all sense of false prestige, and should be ready to offer all respect to others. In such a state of mind one can chant the holy name of the Lord constantly.

Considerations: The question is raised as to when are we willing to renounce our pride completely and accept humility as a permanent way of life, eternally. Only humility of the nature described above will attract krsna into our heart.
In material life, just about everything we do is motivated by pride, desire for self recognition, pratistha, the stool of a she hog. Whether we recognise this or not, it happens. There are times such as when helping an old lady carry her heavy basket, when compassion becomes our motive, but afterwards we feel proud of our selflessness.
We have a tendency to disrespect those whom we consider to be inferior to us in any way, but krsna's surrendered servant sees nobody to be inferior to them. Srila Gour Govinda Swami points out that if a list of the names of every person is compiled, "My name will appear at the bottom". That is humility.
Life is not actually about us, pride has no place in our existence. Service to krsna is the only satisfying reality.
Humility is not an inferior situation, it's natural for a spirit soul to feel humble. It's the innate mood of the spirit soul. Humility is a gift of the ultimate kindness.
We tend to reject humility every time an opportunity for humility is offered to us. Instead, when insulted, belittled, ignored or abused (by krsna's arrangement, I might add), we choose to become angry, non cooperative, maybe even vengeful, to "protect" our pride. It is difficult to remain humble but let's think about it. Why have we chosen to "follow" this path of bhakti. To become impressive fools?
One could be forgiven for thinking that most, if not all of us want to be happy, and Sri Sri Guru and Krsna have repeatedly told us that to be happy we will need to be humble, so we have to do it to achieve our goal of happiness; and we have to do it NOW.
No more wasting time. The only way we'll get this message of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu to the suffering souls, and get them to join our family of loving brothers and sisters is when we are ALL humble enough to cooperate together. When WE, ourselves are the embodiement of humility and tolerance.
Every person, regardless of species, race, status or mentality, is a part of krsna. Always treat them with love and kindness as you would treat krsna Himself, regardless of how they treat you. If possible, teach them something about krsna. Some degraded persons, especially mayavadis, are not good association. They must be avoided and should be offered respect from a distance
However, most persons are, at least, innocent souls simply caught up in this karmic maze, if not actually advanced and noble personalities, and may be offered love, kindness and respect, "up close and personal", as the modern saying goes.
Respect is something that we give to all souls, not just because any individual needs your respect, but because we need to give it. It does us good to be respectful. Furthermore, respect is the lubricant for all societies; a well oiled machine runs efficiently, and that's that. It makes sense to be respectful.
Imagine how nice that can be, everyone, humbly and considerately serving the needs of each other, without judgement, without any desire for even a tinge of superiority. Living and working together to please Srila Gurudeva and their Lordships without any fear at all, knowing that our society of brothers and sisters are way beyond the material mentality.
Humility is our dear friend and our dear friends are all humble. Fear not, for krsna will protect us from the abuse that may arise accidentally or when some distressed person enters our life; yes, krsna will protect us, Gurudeva said so. Then, when our humble hearts are keen to serve without any motivation of selfish reward, love of God becomes a daily, eternal experience.

Note regarding mayavadis

Mayavadis take krsna's and krsna's devotees' unsurpassed gift of sastra (books of pure knowledge) and tattva (truth in reality) and purposely twist the meanings so that they can foolishly avoid surrender to the Lord under the pretence that it is the Lord's instruction. They use this false, impersonal "knowledge" to mislead others subsequently causing enormous amounts of suffering.
This insult to krsna's causeless mercy and kindness, coupled with their efforts to erode all possibilty of happiness for their victims, renders them among the most degaraded low-life. Avoid their association at all times, but please always respect their right to choose according to the free will that krsna has given them. They actually believe their nonsense philosophy as anything can make sense to one who has a vested interest.

Paradise lost

Remember that they, themselves may have been innocent souls corrupted by other mayavadis and they suffer extreme distress. A little compassion for them will do you no harm but do not try to save them unless you are an extremely advanced devotee.
Mayavadis are usually very skillful scholars who accept knowledge for its own sake, rejecting the love to which such knowledge points, in favour of becoming God Himself. Impossible, but blinded by desire they undertake immense efforts to succeed, although failure is the only possible outcome as the infintessimal spirit soul is NOT the all encompassing Lord God and can never become something she is not.
Being very knowlegable of all sastra, they can present extremely convincing arguements to all but advanced devotees, thus association with mayavadis can, and probably will, destroy every trace of attraction to krsna that you have garnered over years, or even lifetimes, of dedication.
They are effectively bhakti's enemies, attempting to thwart krsna's devotees' efforts to bring happiness to the suffering souls in this world of maya. As Lord Ramachandra said, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." Thus we can deduce, the enemy of my friend is also my enemy (bhakti devi is our friend).

Pride cometh before the fall

Mayavadis are extremely proud of their amassed knowledge. Eliminate every trace of pride from your heart. Pride is mayavadi mentality. Always be as humble as possible, even if it's apparently not required. Disrespect, of any discription, is impersonalism. Eradicate it immediately.

Humility favours the spirit soul

Impersonalist, mayavadi philosophy is the last snare of maya. Do NOT get caught.

Teachings of Gour Govinda Swami

Srila Gour Govinda Swami spoke on numerous topics numerous times, but ultimately he only ever spoke about krsna prema; this he did with all his heart.

It is obvious that there are a multitude of topics discussed within the Srimad Bhagavatam and the Caitanya Caritamrta alone, what to speak of the vast array of vedic literatures (although it could be argued that SB deals only with service to krsna), and as each day's class presented new topics Srila Gour Govinda Swami spoke on these topics.

He did, however, keep returning to similar very important themes, within his classes.
Note: Here, on the Sevamrta website, we anticipate that our visitors are already familiar with the ABCs of spiritual life such as "You are not the body", Bhagavad Gita 2.12-13, and "You are the eternal servant of krsna, nityo nityanam", Katha Upanishad 2.2.13 and Svetasvatara Upanishad 3.6.13. These topics are discussed in the Bhagavad Gita and other preliminary texts.

Srila Gour Govinda Swami often complained that he was teaching post graduate topics to primary students, but that since the topic had arisen, he was compelled to speak on it. This situation was at the heart of our good fortune.

Siddhanta

S o many topics were covered by Srila Gour Govinda Swami's lectures during his travels around the globe, according to the verse presented in the various sastra be it SB, BG, CC, according to where each local temple had recently been reading; topics could include guru seva, family life, lilas and their meanings, Srimati Radharani, brahmacari life, Lord Nityananda, aparadha, independence, maya, demons, harinama, pride, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur, Ramananda Raya, Srila Narottama das, sadhu sangha, krsna prema, rasa, simplicity, varnashrama, etc, etc.
The intelligent conclusion is that there is a definite goal to be achieved by all this knowledge, and as he imparted it to his audiences, SGGS made no secret that he wanted us to realise what this goal is, also by which methods one could reach the goal, and how to avoid pitfalls.

The pitfalls are of course, aparadhas including the numerous offences one could commit. Offences may beset unwary neophytes just embarking upon the bhakti margha, even up to and including the stage of nistha, but if one knows and understands Sri Guru's instructions and follows strictly and without envy, to the best of one's ability (we are not always as strong as we'd like to be, and don't I know it), and if one NEVER abandons this bhakti-margha, one is sure to meet with success eventually, if not a lot sooner. HDG taught us that if we keep praying for the mercy of Sri Nityananda Prabhu, clinging tightly to His lotus feet, we shall reach our goal.

Suddha Nama

Not withstanding the fact that each of us has the ultimate goal of association with krsna in the mood most attractive to each of us as an individual, ie cowherd boy, parent, manjari, whatever, we also have a more immediate goal that applies to each of us right now even in this material world of kali yuga. Srila Gour Govinda Swami spoke extensively on such topics and IMHO I would unhesitatingly put forward the main goal of our attempts at bhakti to be chanting the pure name of the Lord as presented by Sri Sri Goura Nitai. This can only be acheived by one who has love of god, krsna-prema so it would appear that chanting pure name and loving krsna are not distinct from each other since the chanting is the path to krsna-prema. Whilst various other important topics were aired, the other topics appear to be presented in relation to this extremely important goal.

"To get krsna", Srila Gour Govinda Swami would so often say. To reach the stage of suddhanama-harinama is precicely this. Others might argue in favour of going back to Godhead but let me remind you that suddhanama-harinama is required to achieve Godhead, and chanting pure nama Himself is the perfection of life in and of itself; going back to Godhead is not actually necessary to be a perfect soul although it does present certain unique opportunities for sweet service in one's own mood.

Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu came to give us the Holy Name, the pure name. Patiently, with your heart filled with love and in a very humble mood, chant these Holy Names:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
.

for the Lord is your very dear friend.
Other topics, integral to achieving our goal of chanting the pure name form the rest of this short list of topics as taught by Srila Gour Govinda Swami. Any other topics, whilst important, are integral to topics on this short list, or lead one to one, or more, of these.
As Srila Gour Govinda Swami told us how to reach the level of chanting the pure name, "There are some do's and some don't do's", he would say. Below I have listed two don't do's and three do's.

Avoid offences

Offences are the certain method of stalling and even failing in our spiritual life. Especially avoid offences to vaisnavas. Being offensive to ordinary jivas is sinful but being offensive to or criticising any vaisnava will erode and eventually destroy your spiritual life. A vaisnava is defined by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur as being anyone who chants the holy name even once, and given the three levels of chanting the holy name, ie, namaparadha, namabasa, and suddhanama, I would consider that ninda applies even to namaparadhi vaisnava devotees (souls who've reached the stage of blossoming consciousness), although sadhu ninda (criticising or blaspheming a pure sadhu who is completely blossoming counsciousness personified) is far worse as the results of sadhu ninda are considered to be both devastating and permanent.

We are all familiar with the 10 offences to the holy name but perhaps we don't always remember that criticism is the key to sadhu ninda, vaisnava aparadha. When we criticise, we not only criticise the person we are criticising, but because everything happens according to the will of the Lord, we are also criticisning the Lord.

Whilst it could be said that offencelessness is actually a part of the "trinad api sunicena/humility" topic group, I have decided to mention it here, FIRST, due to it's sheer importance. Srila Gour Govinda Swami is always very down on offenders and spoke often regarding avoiding offences.

So please be very considerate of EVERY soul and do not criticise anybody, regardless of who they are.

Avoid bad association

This is really the opposite side of sadhu-sangha. Just as it behooves one to accept all things favourable for one's bhajan one should also reject unfavourable association that is not conducive to bhakti. If we can assist others by letting them know about krsna, by all means do so. It is a risk to associate with ordinary persons when preaching but it is a risk worth taking to offer them the gift of bhakti. Try to limit association with members of the opposite sex even if they are devotees as the wicked mind knows no boundaries. Bad association will always disturb the tranquillity of the mind.
Bad association is not limited to the people with whom we associate and their materialistic conversations, but their ideas, irrelevant of the media that presents them. Books, television, movies, magazines, even our own indulgences such as gardening to impress the neighbours, playing rock, classical or jazz music, collecting vintage automobiles, stamps, coins, wines, old books or paintings, recollecting the games of one's childhood, daydreaming about some imaginary future, etc. This type of thing is an unnecessary distraction from our bhajan, which will lead to further distraction and useless attachments; it is best to avoid these things for, as our mind associates with them we accept a subtle message that Sri Sri Radha Krsna and our Gurudeva are not welcome at every moment. Unless They are wholeheartedly welcome at every moment, why should Sri Sri Radha Krsna be attracted to enter into your heart?
"Always remember krsna, never forget krsna", says Caitanya Mahaprabhu. If we can follow (or even approach) this instruction by not wasting a single moment by associating with the mediocrity of the material realm, we are certainly heading in the right direction. If you are one of those unfortunate persons who must work with all kinds of people to maintain one's family, at least do the best you can and try not to associate any more than necessary because when we fill our minds with useless things, in an insidious fashion we lose the inclination to dive into the divine ocean.
Most importantly, NEVER ever associate with persons who criticise devotees. In fact, I would go so far as to advise against any criticism, in any way, shape or form, and that's that. And NEVER, under any circumstance, associate with mayavadis. (See right hand column)

Sadhu Sangha

'sadhu-sanga', 'sadhu-sanga' – sarva-sastre kaya
lava-matra sadhu-sange sarva-siddhi haya

Translation: "The verdict of all revealed scriptures is that by even a moment's association with a pure devotee, one can attain all success." (Caitanya-Caritamrta, Madya, 22.54)
Taking the association of a bona-fide sadhu heads the following list of three things we should do. Sadhu sangha is much more than simply sitting in an audience whilst a sadhu speaks topics glorifying the Lord, His lilas, His devotees and the path of bhakti. Srila Gour Govinda Swami points out that one should not daydream whilst sadhu speaks, letting one's mind wander from Paris to Rome to London and back. One should, "with concentrated attention" hear the message of sadhu, AND one should follow the teachings. In fact Srila Gour Govinda Swami goes so far as to say, "Sadhu sangha means to imbibe the mood of the sadhu".

sevamrta lotus
images To do this, one will need to follow Bhagavad-Gita 4.34 to the letter and by getting to know the sadhu(s) as one who is very dear to one's heart, in short, by forming a deep, non-duplicious, dependant, sweet, personal relationship with the sadhu (based on service, friendship, and enquiry), one will understand the mood of the sadhu.

Thus, by pleasing the sadhu, we can, by the sadhu's mercy, understand his mood, and finding it both lacking in our own heart and realising it to be so very attractive, we can take steps to imbibe said mood within our own heart.
It goes without saying that one may take a lifetime, or even many lifetimes, to imbibe the mood of the sadhu but at least knowing the mood of the sadhu arms us with the perfect direction to aim our efforts.

Srimad Bhagavatam

dharmah projjhita-kaitavo 'tra paramo nirmatsaranam satam

Translation: "Completely rejecting all religious activities which are materially motivated, this Bhagavata Purana propounds the highest truth, which is understandable by those devotees who are fully pure in heart. The highest truth is reality distinguished from illusion for the welfare of all. Such truth uproots the threefold miseries. This beautiful Bhagavatam, compiled by the great sage Vyasadeva [in his maturity], is sufficient in itself for God realization. What is the need of any other scripture? As soon as one attentively and submissively hears the message of Bhagavatam, by this culture of knowledge the Supreme Lord is established within his heart". (Srimad Bhagavatam 1.1.2)
Srimad Bhagavatam, according to Srila Gour Govinda Swami, should be a daily event; nitya he would say. He would often advise us that "A day without Srimad Bhagavatam is a very bad day indeed".

In describing the lilas of many of krsna's devotees, all (some, albeit, eventually) surrendering to krsna's will, from those somewhat accidentally finding darshan (Druva Maharaja) right up to those Who's bhakti is verily the ultimate pinnacle of service to krsna (Srimati Radharani and the gopis of Vrindavan), wherin krsna Himself laments His inability to repay the gopis' faultless service*, Srimad Bhagavatam assumes the role of the ideal guide to success for the aspiring, and indeed the already successful, devotee.

Pariksit Maharaja heard Srimad Bhagavatam for only seven days and nights. He was only hearing. He did not practice any of the other nine limbs of bhakti. However, simply by hearing, he received gopi-bhava.

Make Srimad Bhagavatam, especially if heard from the lotus lips of a sadhu, a part of your every day.

Srimad-Bhagavatam (10.32.22)

trinad api sunicena

The mood of trinad api sinicena is usually embodied in one word … humility. Srila Gour Govinda Swami spoke of the humble mood of Sri Caitanya when He sat outside a gathering of mayavadi sannyasins. Although He is the Lord Himself, He sat outside where the other sannyasins washed their feet. He glowed with a radiance that only absolute purity could manifest and via His humility, converted all the mayavadis to vaisnavism. Such is the power of humility.
Srila Gour Govinda Swami sometimes spoke of the holes (or cracks) in our pot (our heart) wherein the nectar of sabda brahman flows into our heart but again flows out of the cracks. To keep the nectar within our heart we need to plug up the cracks. The cracks are our offences, thus, following the advice of the trinad api sunicena verse is tantamount to spiritual success, for the humble heart commits no offence.
Then when one has accrued enough sukruti to take sadhu sangha, one receives the nectar directly via the ears when listening to the words of Srimad Bhagavatam from a sadhu and, if the holes are all plugged tight by one's adherence to the habit of offencelessness, the nectar accumulates until it overflows into the hearts of others via the same process of loving instruction.
Humility is essential to chant pure name. Hearing the pure name from sadhu, the pure heart chants the name in a humble mood and spiritual success is ensured.

Impressions

Anyway this is the tattva-vichar as I see it, according to the impressions left upon my heart. Thus, this list of five main topics often reitterated by Srila Gour Govinda Swami may have more to do with my own mood rather than any reality as presented by Sri Sri Guru and Gauranga. How would I know? I am just a poor, slow-witted idiot, who is not only half deaf, but much worse than that, completely blind to the world of the vaisnavas, yet I have presented my conclusion here in the hope that it assists even one devotee to stay on the path of bhakti.
You may have reached other conclusions, and who am I to say that I am correct and you are not? This is siddhanta as I see her (for bhakti is alive and very, very personal) presented here for the benefit of one and all. Absolutely no offense is intended to any soul. This is what I heard from Srila Gour Govinda Swami.
Kind wishes to all souls whoever and wherever you may be.

Srila AC Bhaktivedanta says:
"So this Mayavadi philosophy, to become one with the supreme father, is like that". . ." So this is the last snare, that to become one with the Supreme. Ye 'nye 'ravindaksa vimukta-ma...tvayy asta-bhavat. Because they have no information that they can go back to home, back to Godhead, and enjoy the company of the Supreme Lord, they think that to become one with the Supreme, that is the highest perfection." [Srila AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Pabhupada, Bombay, December 3, 1974].
"The Mayavada philosophy, impersonalists, they say that if God has expanded in everything there is no particular personal existence of God. That is Mayavada philosophy. But that is not the fact. Fact is that although God is personal, He is person. Just like you are person, I am person, He is person, but He is the Supreme Person. And everything is expanded by His energy." [Srila AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Pabhupada, Melbourne, April 24, 1976].
Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu says:
jivera nistara lagi' sutra kaila vyasa
mayavadi-bhasya sunile haya sarva-nasa

Srila Vyasadeva presented the Vedanta philosophy for the deliverance of conditioned souls, but if one hears the commentary of Sankaracarya, everything is spoiled.
Purport by Srila AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Factually, the devotional service of the Lord is described in the Vedanta-sutra, but the Mayavadi philosophers, the Sankarites, prepared a commentary known as Sariraka-bhasya, in which the transcendental form of the Lord is denied. The Mayavadi philosophers think that the living entity is identical with the Supreme Soul, Brahman. Their commentaries on the Vedanta-sutra are completely opposed to the principle of devotional service. Caitanya Mahaprabhu therefore warns us to avoid these commentaries. If one indulges in hearing the Sankarite Sariraka-bhasya, he will certainly be bereft of all real knowledge.

The ambitious Mayavadi philosophers desire to merge into the existence of the Lord, and this may be accepted as sayujya-mukti. However, this form of mukti means denying one's individual existence. In other words, it is a kind of spiritual suicide. This is absolutely opposed to the philosophy of bhakti-yoga. Bhakti-yoga offers immortality to the individual conditioned soul. If one follows the Mayavadi philosophy, he misses his opportunity to become immortal after giving up the material body. The immortality of the individual person is the highest perfectional stage a living entity can attain.

NOTE: Srila Gour Govinda Swami sang this Bengali verse (above) daily, as part of his daily glorification of Srimad Bhagavatam. This stresses its importance.

TRANSLATION: " In Badarikasrama Dhruva Maharaja’s senses became completely purified because he bathed regularly in the crystal-clear purified water. He fixed his sitting position and by yogic practice controlled the breathing process and the air of life; in this way his senses were completely withdrawn. Then he concentrated his mind on the arca-vigraha form of the Lord, which is the exact replica of the Lord and, thus meditating upon Him, entered into complete trance. "
Here is a description of the astanga-yoga system, to which Dhruva Maharaja was already accustomed. Astanga-yoga was never meant to be practiced in a fashionable city. Dhruva Maharaja went to Badarikasrama, and in a solitary place, alone, he practiced yoga. He concentrated his mind on the arca-vigraha, the worshipable Deity of the Lord, which exactly represents the Supreme Lord, and thus thinking constantly of that Deity, he became absorbed in trance. Worship of the arca-vigraha is not idol worship.
The arca-vigraha is an incarnation of the Lord in a form appreciable by a devotee. Therefore devotees engage in the temple in the service of the Lord as arca-vigraha, a form made of sthula (material) objects such as stone, metal, wood, jewels or paint. All of these are called sthula, or physical representations. Since the devotees follow the regulative principles of worship, even though the Lord is there in His physical form, He is non-different from His original, spiritual form. Thus the devotee gets the benefit of achieving the ultimate goal of life that is to say, becoming always absorbed in thought of the Lord. This incessant thought of the Lord, as prescribed in the Bhagavad-gita, makes one the topmost yogi. [End of Srila Prabhupada’s purport to SB 4.12.18]
HH Radhanath Swami: I am very grateful to be with all of you in the holy dham of Sri Mayapur. I am very humbled and honored to have this chance to try to serve you by speaking something from Srimad-Bhagavatam. Today we are reading from Canto four chapter twelve entitled ‘Dhruva Maharaja Goes Back to Godhead’, text seventeen.
We read in this story how Dhruva, inspired by his mother from his very early age went to the forest in search of God. It was in Vrindavan that he found his spiritual master. Actually he was in the forest and he found Narada Muni who then sent him to Vrindavan, specifically Madhuvan. And there worshipping the deity of the Lord, made of clay with his own hands, constantly chanting of the mantra om namo bhagavate vasudevaya, he meditated on the Deity within his heart. Within just a few months he attained perfect self realization.
For many thousands of years he ruled the world under the direction of the Lord and at the same time he renounced everything. He went to Badrikasrama and there according to the verse we are reading today, “He concentrated his mind on the arca-vigraha form of the Lord which is the exact replica of the Lord thus meditating upon Him, entered into complete trance.”
Today we are observing the disappearance of His Holiness Srila Gour Govinda Swami Maharaj. And my dear friend Madhavananda Prabhu has given me some of the manuscript of an incredibly outstanding book that he is compiling. I would like to share some excerpts beginning with the parallels of Dhruva Maharaj and Gour Govinda Maharaj.
Gour Govinda Maharaj was also from a very early time in his childhood inspired by his mother to worship the Deity of Gopal and here at Sri Mayapur Dhama like Dhruva Maharaj with a photo of Gopal in his hand surrounded by devotees doing kirtana he entered into the ultimate trance and went back to the spiritual world. He was born on Sept 2nd 1929 near Orissa in a village called Jagannatha-pura. He was named Braja-bandhu. His family was very, very serious devotees coming from the very old tradition of Gaudiya Vasinavaism. His mother from a village of Gadeigiri worshipped for all her life the Deity of Gopal Jui. That deity was worshipped in her family for over three hundred and sixty years.
Srila Prabhupada tells us when he was a child he would see his father worshipping the deity of Radha-Govinda and that had such a deep impression on his life. He taught us that this is the most important responsibility of raising children - from the very beginning to give them that deep impression in their heart not only of the form of the Lord but seeing the parents lovingly worshipping the Lord.
His family was renowned for the performance of nama-sankirtan. Actually when he was just born a famous astrologer told his family members that he would be a great devotee, a great scholar, he will be married for some time then give up all material attachments, become a sadhu, preach all over the world. He would make the village of Gadeigiri famous. And he concluded by saying according to his reading that this child has been sent from the spiritual world for this purpose. [Audience chant Haribol!]
His family members shared with devotees that by the time he was eight years old he was well verse in reading Bhagavad-gita; Srimad-Bhagavatam, Sri Caitanya-caritamrta. He would be naughty and cry and the only thing that would stop him from crying is if someone put a Srimad-Bhagavatam in his hands. He would get absorbed in reading it.
By the time he was four, they had no electricity and at night it was dark. His mother would be cooking and he would sit right close to the fire and in its light continue his reading of Srimad-Bhagavatam. When he was between twelve and fifteen he was living with his uncles in Gadai-ghiri. The family told that his basic schedule was that he would wake up early in the morning, do seva to Gopal, do his studies and then when he would come back from his studies he would do kirtana for the rest of the evening and in the night with his uncles sometimes go village to village preaching the glories of the holy names.
He wasn’t interested in playing or cinema. Whenever there was free time he would do kirtana, serve the deities and read Srimad Bhagavatam. Everyone around him could see that he was extraordinary although he always kept himself in a very simple and humble demeanor.
By his mother’s strong wish in 1952 he was married. Soon after that his father passed away from the world. Braja Bandhu being the eldest son had to take the burden of all the finances of the family on himself. He worked and at night he studied and by taking tests he ultimately got degrees and became a teacher in a secondary school.
He had four sons and three daughters. During that time and throughout his life he kept a diary. Most of the entries into the diary were personal letters to Gopal, his worshipable Lord. He would begin each passage, “With the mercy of Gopal this day was spent thus.” And then he would write his realizations, his i, his activities for the day. Each entry would end with a prayer to Gopal, “Please give me prema-bhakti, love for Krishna.”
He performed his duties responsibly with his eldest son was old enough to take care of the family in 1974; he was forty five years old when he had a calling. Srila gour Govinda Maharaj explained to us that he was thinking that he is spending so much of his life teaching these mundane subjects and if he taught the children what was really in his heart, his superiors would find it unacceptable.
He wanted to give his life to teach the eternal truth of Srimad-Bhagavatam. That calling after twenty years, around twenty two years as a householder, detached him from everything except the will to search out a pure devotee he could accept as a guru.
Studying Srimad-Bhagavatam and Sri Caitanya-caritamrta he understood what the truth was and that he had to have a spiritual master who could bless him and give him everything. He had a dream at that time in his life after much prayer Gopal appeared to him and told him to take sannyasa. In the middle of the night he left his family. People tried to stop him in so many ways but he was determined.
He explained to the devotees that he was staying at a temple across from his house where his teachers and other friends and family members were coming and trying to convince him to come back. And he turned to one sadhu and asked him to sing a particular bhajan, a prayer to the mind describing the temporary entanglements of this material world, the nature of this vanishing body and the need to take shelter of the Supreme Lord Govinda. When he sang the last line Braja-bandhu fainted. Everyone knew that they could not stop him.
He went to Gadai-ghiri and prayed to Gopal for direction and it was then that he had that vision, the order to become a sannyasi. He wandered to the Himalayas, all the way down to Kanya-kumari searching for a spiritual master. In the Himalayas he met many yogis, sadhus, swamis, gurus and heard from them. But he was so deeply learned. He was looking for someone who would teach him who is Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, how to surrender to that, what is the greatness of bhakti and the holy name. And asrama after asrama meeting gurus he would quote, “That in this age of Kali the recommended process is the chanting of God’s holy names. harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam [Adi 17.21]Why are you not teaching this?” And his spiritual leaders would usually tell him “Please get out from here.”
In this way he wandered thousands and thousands and thousands of miles and ultimately came to Vrindavan. There he would stay in a different asrama each night, learn what they teach, meet the gurus from all the different sampradayas but somehow he wasn’t completely satisfied. Then one day he was walking down the road in Raman Reti and he saw a sign, ‘The International Society for Krishna Consciousness.’ He went in they were just digging the foundation for the Krishna Balaram Temple. There were a couple mud huts and one small room where Srila Prabhupada lived.
The devotees gave him a ‘Back to Godhead Magazine’ and where he saw Srimad-Bhagavatam, he saw Lord Caitanya and he saw the maha-mantra he was thinking, “This is it.” He went to a devotee and said, “I want to meet this person His Divine Grace A.C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Is it possible?” he said, “You go to his secretary.”
He went to HH Brahmananda Swami who said, “Why do you want to meet Srila Prabhupada?” [Laughter] he said, “He is a paramahamsa. I want to offer my obeisances and receive his blessings.” It was noon time. Srila Prabhupada had just taken prasad and was sitting on a chair and Brahmananda Prabhu went in and he said, “There is a sadhu out there. He wants to see you.” Prabhupada said, “Bring him in.”
Srila Gour Govinda Maharaj explained that when Prabhupada looked at him he could feel with all certainty that Srila Prabhupada knew everything. As the representative of the paramatma Srila Prabhupada knew exactly how to teach and bless this devotee who had already taken upon himself the name Gour Gopalananda. Srila Prabhupada then asked him, “Who are you? What is your name? Where do you come from?” Then Srila Prabhupada asked, “Are you a sannyasi?” Gour Gopalananda said, “No.” Srila Prabhupada looked at him and said, “I will give you sannyasa.” [Audience say ‘Haribol!’]
He was speaking in Hindi and Srila Prabhupada was very impressed with his command over the Hindi language. He said, “Would you like to translate my books into Hindi?” he said, “Yes.”
Gour Govinda Maharaj explained that on that first meeting he was certain that ths was his guru and he surrendered his body, mind, words and life to the service of Srila Prabhupada. Srila Prabhupada had Brahmananda Prabhu give one article from the ‘Back to Godhead’ and said, “Give him a pen and paper and let us see how he can translate.” He translated a couple of paragraphs. Prabhupada read the article and said, “Yes, you will translate my books.” He told him, “You stay here. We will take care of you.” He told the Temple President. The Temple President said, “You cannot stay here!” [Laughter]
So he stayed in an asrama outside and was coming everyday and he was doing services. He was washing pots and rolling chapattis, he was carrying big buckets of water and whenever possible he was translating. After some days he met with Srila Prabhupada. Prabhupada said, “Are you comfortable here?” he said, “They won’t let me stay.” He said, “That is all right because they think you might be a thief.” [Laughter] So Srila Prabhupada explained to them and they gave him a nice room. People were thinking, “Nice room. It’s a mud hut. Why is he getting like this?”Srila Gour Govinda Maharaj said that the devotees would often refer to him as, “The Mayavadi sannyasi.” [Laughter]
Srila Prabhupada left that place and from Delhi he wrote him a letter and told him to translate ‘The Perfection of Yoga.’ Srila Prabhupada wrote another letter to him through Brahmananda Prabhu and told him that he was just donated a property in Bhubaneswara and he wanted Srila Gour Govinda Maharaj to go there to develop it, build a temple, train his disciples in Hindi and preach to the people in the Oriyan language. He wasn’t yet initiated. Srila Prabhupada said, “Come to Mayapur right away and we will discuss it.”
In Mayapur Srila Prabhupada gave him first initiation and the name Gour Govinda dasa. Sometime later he got another letter from Srila Prabhupada to come to Bombay. When he came to Bombay he was given second initiation - just couple months later. Then Srila Prabhupada had one disciple, Bhagavat Prabhu who was traveling as a leader of a little brahmacari group. He sent them to Bhubaneswara together to establish Iskcon.
When they got to the land it was far from the city, desolate, no electricity or water anywhere near it. It was a jungle. And Bhagavat Prabhu who was somewhat of an experienced devotee (In those days if you were a devotee for a few years you were very senior.) He said, “We can’t live here. It is horrible and too dangerous. This is the type of place where there are so many dacoits and you could be killed in broad daylight. We have to go.”
Gour Govinda Maharaj said, “It is Srila Prabhupada’s wish that we stay. I am staying. Nothing will take me away from here.” Bhagavat said, “Well we are going.” He said, “Then I will stay alone.” Bhagavat Prabhu said, “You are a brahmacari under me. Bramacaris cannot stay alone. You come.” [Laughter]
Soon after that Srila Prabhupada was in Hyderabad where Gour Govinda Maharaj met him. They were discussing developing Bhubaneswar and Gour Govinda Maharaj said to Prabhupada, “Please give me sannyasa so that I could stay over and develop the land properly for you because nobody else wants to stay there.” [Laughter] Srila Prabhupada said, “Yes, I will give you sannyasa at the installation of Krishna Balarama on Ram Naumi in Vrindavan.”
So he went to Vrindavan soon after that but the GBC had made a resolution just recently that any candidates for sannyasa had to be approved by the whole GBC body and then they had to be observed for a minimum of one year. And Srila Prabhupada signed and approved that resolution. [Laughter]
Although there was an initiation for sannyasis in the Krishna Balarama Temple Srila Prabhupada privately called Gour Govinda Maharaj to his room and gave him the mantra, the danda and the dress of a sannyasi. In this way Srila Prabhupada did not violate the rule. [Laughter] But at the same time achieved his aim.
He took first, second and sannyasa initiation within eight months of joining Iskcon and meeting Srila Prabhupada. There were complaints. People complained to Prabhupada that, “This new man, he has so much responsibilities, he is a sannyasi.” And Srila Prabhupada replied, “He took his birth as a devotee.” It was Prabhupada speaking to his senior most people. He said, “Gour Govinda Maharaj took his birth as a devotee. You are all new men.” [Laughter]
Gour Govinda Maharaj asked Prabhupada if he would give him some funding, some men and some books to start the project in Bhubaneswara. Srila Prabhupada said, “No.” [Laughter] He said, “My Guru Maharaj, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Maharaj gave me instruction to spread Krishna consciousness. And when I went to America on the Jaladutta I had no money, I had no funding, I had nothing.”
Srila Prabhupada wanted to give Gour Govinda Maharaj the opportunity to do what he did, but to make it easier for him Prabhupada said, “I went to a foreign land. [Laughter] You are going to Orissa where you are from.” So he went to Bhubaneswar. He took that order as his life and soul. He had no money. He had no one and the land was practically uninhabitable.
So he was going and living in the dharmsala for the night but after sometime he had to get out. He was going from dharamsala to dharamsala to dharamsala. He would go out house to house to beg for food. Then ultimately someone built him a little thatched hut in which he stayed for some time.
Then he had another letter from Prabhupada inviting him to come to the Kumbhamela and there Srila Prabhupada told him, After Kumbhamela I would come with you to Bhubaneswar.” So he rushed back to try to make arrangements for Srila Prabhupada. He tried to arrange a water pipe so that there was water there because there was no water in the land. He tried to arrange a nice little hut made out of clay and straw. He tried to arrange some sort of lighting. He was really working hard day and night trying to clear some of the jungle land.
Then Prabhupada came to Bhubaneswar. He arranged a nice government house for Srila Prabhupada but when Srila Prabhupada saw the very primitive thatched hut on the property, he said, “I will stay here with my beloved disciple Gour Govinda Maharaj.” Prabhupada stayed for sixteen days and every day, sometimes for hours and hours he and Gour Govinda Maharaj would discuss intimate topics.
He told him that he wanted him to translate all of his books into Oriyan language. He told him, “I want you to build a temple here. You will see that in the near future this property will be the centre of Bhubaneswar. And the temple that you will build will be one of the greatest temples in our movement.” Srila Prabhupada told him to preach all over the world. He blessed him.
After Srila Prabhupada departed Gour Govinda Maharaj took this instruction so seriously. He lived on the property and all the other people were some coolies who were doing the hard labor. And he had Prabhupada’s order.
vyavasayatmika buddhir, ekeha kuru-nandana [Bg 2.41]
Srila Prabhupada explained that this is how we advance in Krishna consciousness. By being resolute in purpose and our aim should be one, which is to make the order of our guru our life and our soul.
He heard that Srila Prabhupada was in his last stages in his earthly lila and Gour Govinda Maharaj went to Vrindavan and spent beautiful intimate time with Srila Prabhupada there in his last days. Srila Prabhupada asked Gour Govinda Maharaj, “What is the climate like in Bhubaneswar?” He said, “It is very nice.” Srila Prabhupada said, “I want to go to Bhubaneswar.” This was in the very last days. And also around him was Srila Bhakti Charu Swami Maharaj, Bhavananda Prabhu, Tamal Krishna was saying, “No. No. You can’t travel now.” But he actually wanted to go to be with Gour Govinda Maharaj in Bhubaneswar.
He sent Gour Govinda Maharaj back. He left. Bhakti Charu Swami tells the story that Prabhupada asked, “How is he going to the railway station?” Bhakti Charu Swami came back and said, “He is planning to take a bus.” Srila Prabhupada said, “Arrange my own personal car to bring him to the railway station.”
Soon Srila Prabhupada departed and in intense pains of separation from his guru he found his vani his life and soul. And what was it like living there for him? It really was a jungle. Madhavananda Prabhu explains in his book that one day Gour Govinda Maharaj on the land gave a Bhagavad-gita class. Then he got up after the class and a cobra fell from his lap. He did not even know it was there. Every now and then there would be wild elephants coming, deers and snakes - very austere.
He went in 1979 to Mayapur Dham. He came here and at that time one of Srila Prabhupada’s God brothers, HH Bhakti Daitya Madhava Maharaj had passed from the world. There was a samadhi ceremony. Many of the leaders of the Mayapur Candrodaya Mandir went. There was a beautiful kirtan and Gour Govinda Maharaj was absorbed in the holy names and was swaying back and forth. Then suddenly he fell to the ground, fainting. They did not know what happened to him. Devotees picked him up and brought him back to his room and he was crying out, “Gauranga Mahaprabhu, Nityananda Prabhu, Gopal, Sri Radharani, Krishna!” He was crying and crying Krishna’s names and he persisted for days.
They called on astrologer. The astrologer said, “As far as I could see he is in divine ecstasy.” But some of the devotees were thinking that nobody will believe and astrologer saying that. So they called an ayurvedic doctor and the ayurvedic doctor said, “This is some sort of madness that is very incomprehensible.” Then one day Krsnadasa Babaji Maharaj who was one of Srila Prabhupada’s best friends whom Prabhupada called a paramahamsa, they brought him into Gour Govinda Maharaja’s room and put a piece of straw under his nose, took his pulse, felt his head and then Krsnadasa Babaji Maharaj started laughing and he said, “It is krsna-prema.” [Laughter and applause] And then he walked away. [Applause]
Srila Prabhupada attracted such a variety of incredible personalities! He was in that state for four months where he couldn’t really do anything except for cry out the names of the Lord. He was in Bhubaneswar. After that four months he just came out of it and he asked devotees around him, “How long was I sleeping?” [Laughter] They said, “Four months!” [Laughter] He was amazed. He though it was just a few minutes!
Meanwhile living on the land - so exemplary, his humility, his simplicity and his devotion every day he would go out at four o’clock in the afternoon to beg. He had a quota. He would go to twenty one houses to beg for funds to build a temple. He was doing this for months and months. Later when his students said, “Let me do it, let me do it.” The students did it. And he was making a hundred and sixty rupees a month. That was the beginning stages of building a temple in Bhubaneswar but he was never discouraged because it was the order of his guru.
He was printing ‘Back to Godhead Magazine’ in the Oriyan language and the person who was doing the publishing passed away. So for several months there was no BTG. Then Tejas Prabhu came and started it going again. But about four or five times a month Srila Gour Govinda Maharaj would have to go to the press. From the land he would walk two kilometers. He would take a bus then walk five and a half kilometers. He would go to the press. He would spend most of the day proof reading, doing final editing then he would walk five and a half kilometers back to the bus, take the bus then walk two kilometers again back to the land. By that time it was dark.
Gour Govinda Maharaj would only eat once a day. In fact he had a standard that until he finished a quarter of translating Prabhupada’s books, a quarter of the pages, he wouldn’t even take a drop of water every day. On the days that he went to the press often times it was night and he also had a vow he would eat at night. So he would hardly eat.
One of his disciples said, “Why don’t we get a rickshaw?” Gour Govinda Maharaj said, “We can’t waste so much money.” The rickshaw was three rupees in total. He will never accept it. He said, “This is Srila Prabhupada’s money. We must see it as sacred and never waste it.” That was his spirit. And we can see how that spirit can draw such incredible mercy of Lord Krishna.
In 1985 another aspect of Prabhupada’s instruction to him unfolded. He travelled to Europe. He was from an Orissan Village. Now he was on a jet plane and the person who was serving him on the plane explains it was really a culture shock. There was an airline hostess dressed the way airline hostess’s used to dress in those days, going around and giving people food. And he said, “What is happening? What is she doing? Why is this single lady going up to everybody?” “She is giving everybody food.” Hare Krishna he was chanting.
The brahmacari assistant was very thirsty. He said, “Bring me some juice. Can I have some juice?’ Gour Govida Maharaj said, “I am sannyasi. You are brahmacari. We cannot take food from a woman. We don’t know who she is.” [Laughter]
They went to Rome and he gave a two hour Srimad-Bhagavatam class. But before the class he said, “I have to pass water.” So he went to pass water in the bathroom and he was in it for a really, really long time. And everyone was waiting for the class. They knocked on the door and said, “Is everything all right?” They opened the door and he was completely soaking wet. They said, “What happened?” He said, “I just turned on the water and it all soaked me.” [Laughter] He never saw a shower before. [Laughter] he turned the wrong tap and got a full shower. [Laughter] but he went and gave class. Everyone was spell bound by that class. He kept going on and on. The leader of the community said, “It is time for Prasad.”
He went to Spain. There was a massive drought for one and a half years. The whole community was suffering like anything. Gour Govinda Maharaj said, “If we just have kirtan then the Yajna-purusa, Krishna will send rain.” He gave his Bhagavatam class. I think it was a Gita class and then after the class very intensely he was chanting kirtan for a long time. And thunder started coming in the sky. Devotees said, “Sometimes there is thunder and lightning but there is no rain.
Soon after the class and the kirtan there was a major rain storm. The drought ended. The devotees were so impressed, mesmerized by this. He had such faith and such boldness. They all came to see him. He was supposed to spend many days there but he told his servant, “We should leave immediately.” He said now they are coming to glorify me. I am not one to be glorified. Srila Prabhupada should be glorified. Let us go.”
There are many things to be said. It is already gone overtime which is his tradition [Laughter] but I am not so bold and courageous as him because I have the GBC waiting for me also. [Laughter] But I must at least tell one more story.
It was in 1996. Srila Prabhupada’s centennial was being celebrated all over the world. HH Lokanath Swami Maharaj was inspiring that. In Bhubanesvwar, Gour Govinda Maharaj said to one of his close associates, “This material world is a miserable place. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur said it is not a place for a gentleman and therefore he left this world prematurely. I think I too will be leaving soon.’ That shocked this devotee.
He said, “I will go to Gadeigiri and ask Gopal.” He went before Gopal and prayed before his worshipable Lord. One of his relatives, Ghanasyam, Gour Govinda Maharaj said to him, “You will see the installation of the deities in their new temple in Bhubaneswar, I would not.” He said, “How you say this? I am ten years older than you. I see it and not you?” He knew! He went back to Bhubaneswar and spoke to tens and thousands of people the glories of Srila Prabhupada’s centennial for several days and came here to Sri Mayapur Dham for the annual GBC meetings. It was yesterday. We are celebrating today.
On the appearance day of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur Prabhupada, Srila Gour Govinda Maharaj was in his room and two devotees asked him to speak about why Lord Caitanya had chose to live in Jagannath Puri he was explaining the nature of Gambhira were Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu in order to taste the sweetness of Srimati Radharani’s love in separation He spent the last twelve years of His life in the ecstasy of tasting that vipralambha-bhava.
He told of how when Krishna left Vrindavan what was the condition of the Vrajavasis, especially Srimati Radharani, crying in the ecstasy of love day and night in separation from Sri Krishna. And of Krishna’s heart, crying in separation from Sri Radha and how Krishna returned to Vrindavan after so many years. And Sri Radharani came before Him. Seeing the ecstasy of Her love for Him he went into such a state of ecstasy that His limbs entered into His body and His eyes became very large in size. It was the form of Lord Jagannath.
Narada Muni happened to see this and asked for the benediction that this form of the Lord in ecstasy of love in separation from Srimati Radharani upon Their meeting would be worshipped somewhere in this world and that anyone who goes there to see would get that path/part. (?) That is the eternal origin of Lord Jagannatha. He was telling this story; tears were welling in his eyes. He became choked up and he said, “Krishna. Jagannath looked into Sri Radharani’s eyes and Sri Radha looked into Krishna’s eyes.”
Then he became so emotional, he could not speak any longer. He said, “Please excuse me I cannot talk. Kirtan. Kirtan.” Devotees gathered around, performed beautiful kirtan. He asked for a photograph of his beloved Gopal Jui, the deity he worshipped from his birth. And he held that in his hand and gazed upon it as the kirtan was chanted; he chanted the holy name, leaned back and closed his eyes.
Devotees became very worried. They went to get a doctor. Some doctors said, “He is dead.” But an auyurvedic doctor came and felt his pulse and he said, “He is still living.” There was no heart attack. According to this ayurvedic doctor there was no physical reason for him to leave. He just decided to leave or let us say Srila Prabhupada and Krishna just took him on Sri Bhaktsiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur’s appearance day, during the one hundred anniversary of Srila Prabhupada’s birth appearance in this world in the holy land of Sri Mayapur Dhama after speaking the most intimate lilas in ecstasy of divine love, surrounded by the kirtan of the holy name, His Holiness Srila Gour Govinda Maharaj departed from this world. His blessings, his grace and his incredible example will live forever in our hearts.
Srila Prabhupada had a special very unique love for this special, unique disciple. Today is the day we can set aside to honor, appreciate and worship that love. Thank you very much. [Applause] Srila Gour Govinda Swami Maharaj Ki.Jai! Srila Prabhupada Ki! Jai. Anantakoti Vaisnavavnrda Ki.Jai!
